Neanderthal Electronics with Derek Holzer

Neanderthal Electronics was the title of the week long workshops I recently attended at Digital Arts Studios. Our tutor was Derek Holzer an American artist/musician based in berlin who is touring his tutorial showing people like me (IE: mathematics and physics failures) how to make analogue synths from scratch using simple, cheap and easy to source electronic components.

The end result is a cigar box with knobs and switches and an 'acoustic laptop', both of which shall be used in the upcoming show with Mi Ami and Glissando along with some other bonus material that hasn't been heard before.

Weakling & King - Sawteeth

Post number 200

First post of 2009

Have a free record by the most prolific Dodgy Stereo artist ever.

Weakling & King - Sawteeth

More quality synth pop from Phil Porter. How does he find the time and energy to make so much music and release it for free on such a regular basis, whilst also holding down a full-time job and attending to his duty as a member of (currently under intense re-imagining) Dry County? The answer? Maybe he's not human. Whatever the case, let's be thankful that he uses his energy in such a positive manner.

Enjoy.

Fresh Tunes

I forgot to post 'bout a remix I finished for the Shameless Hussies. They're a duo of music makers (drums and programming, I think?) who use a lot of samples of retro recordings and blend them with more modern noises of their own design. It's party music, suitable for swigging cocktails and gyrating to.

They have released three albums for you to enjoy over at Last.fm. I advise going over there and listening/downloading - I don't think you'll be disapointed.

My remix is not as party-tastic as their original, but I'm happy with it's groggy stomp. You can listen to it over at their myspace or BEW's.

I'm still carving away at remixes for Escape Act and Not Squares.

November do far...

I've been busy making.
A small smoker building to slowly cook meat and fish.

Audio recording using some old equipment I hadn't taken out of storage for quite a long time.

Video edits of clips I hadn't previously had the time to view properly.

Live performances of my new material using my laptop recordings plus some of my old noisey hardware.

Watching and listening to other pieces of fierce music.

Hanging out with charming people.

Goodtimes.

Cecil's Flea Circus - Swap Shop

And now for a little blast from the past. I wondered if there were any traces of Cecil's Flea Circus online, and I found some.

With quotes like, "I've made a fat suit out of sponge" you know it's not clever. It was fun though.

The band was quite busy for a while, playing shows in and around Belfast far too often for their own good. The most important thing was no-one was hurt and plenty of friends were made.

Cashier No. 9 - I Kid You Not + Subtitles + stuff

A short while ago I made a little video for Cashier No. 9's song, 'I Kid You Not'. As an experiment I decided it would be fun to try to add subtitles (maybe as a kind of karaoke version). Above is the result of my first try. The audio has deteriorated quite a bit (dodgy stereo? actually it's monophonic), so I'm going to try some different tools to improve audio fidelity for future versions.

Ingredients:
Clips from the Prelinger archive.
Window's Movie Maker.
Virtualdub.
Aegisub.
DivX codec.
FLAC codec.

In other news, I have a string of VJing gigs lined up. I'll be in Prague on Thursday 13th March at Roxy. It's an early show for Bullerbyne and MIDI LIDI, the Machine Funck djs will also be there.

Next month I'll be back in Fleda on April 5th to vj for Dieselboy and again on the 16th May for Roni Size, thanks to the Level B productions crew who run the Break 4 Beats parties.

February Update - dodgy stereo music + gig stuff...

Last week I had some time off from the day job. I spent my time working on video clips taken from the prelinger archives. Great material.

I also managed to get out of the house and went on a few inspiring day trips. It's good to have the time and freedom to be able to go on a nice long walk and get away from the same surroundings once in a while.

I also got plenty of work done on several projects that have needed loose ends tied up. The Audiobulb project isn't finished yet, but working on it produced a new track for the Dubs EP, which is ready to go as soon as I decide which picture to use for the cover (Sophie Cocault has given me eleven to choose from).

I also managed to finish a piece for Microsound's 'Microspace ' project. The final audioworks are published here. A new project has opened; this year's invitation to submit a piece for Pi day.

I made a little video for Cashier No. 9's tune "I Kid You Not".

I saw a few musicians and djs over my break too. I went to Fleda for the Itch My HaHaHa party last weekend. Good times were had in god company. I hadn't taken any time to research the acts on the flyer as I usually would, instead trusting to luck that there would be some quality action. I was dancing to the Greatest Hits Collective's usual diverse pro-party dj set.

The band in the 'big room' was nothing special (pub-rock meets hiphop?). The last dj on there played some rather groovy blobby synth and beat material that I couldn't dance to but it did make me want to go interupt to ask who it was by...I didn't though...

Last night I caught a solo ambient/improv guitar artist called jiří kučerovský at cafe 3 Trojka. A quiet affair bringing to mind all sorts of post-rock memories. Pure bell like guitar tones and soft drones and wisps of sound layered with echo.
