Ensemble Economique 270712 (EDIT/UPDATE)

Unfortunately the show was cancelled at the last minute due to health issues.

Here's a recording:

This recording is a blend of three short improvisations using the tools which were selected for the show.

ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE (California / Not Not Fun Records)
+ Barry's Electric Workshop

Friday 27th July
Please note - this is an early show!
Door: 7.30pm. Show: 8pm - 9.30pm.
£5

ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE

Ensemble Economique is the immersive psychedelic sound-world of California’s Brian Pyle. In 2010, Pyle released ‘Psychical' on Not Not Fun (home of L.A. Vampires, Peaking Lights, Sex Worker), a stand-out LP in what turned out to be a landmark year for the label.

In true horror soundtrack style, Pyle's work hones in on tense build-ups to create an atmospheric and sometimes unnerving listen.
It's intricate, pattering percussion and noxious analogue ooze invite comparison with Sun Araw, Shackleton and Demdike Stare while charting the dark continent existing only in Pyle’s fevered imagination.

On Psychical: "…this is one of the darkest and most affecting sides of schlock horror we've heard all year." Boomkat
On Motion Forever EP: "The reliably excellent Ensemble Economique strikes out into deeper, more mournful territory than ever before, with seriously compelling results" FACT Magazine

BARRY'S ELECTRIC WORKSHOP

Experimental/electronic producer Barry Cullen releases audio and video work under the name BEW (Barry’s Electric Workshop).
Part of the Dodgy Stereo collective, Barry blends noise and images from old junk with hi-fi sounds and graphics, trying to find a balance between creating something new and making it fit along with something recycled.

CQAF Records: live recording with Rachel Austin feat special guests 060512

Date: Sunday 6 May 2012
Venue: Ollie's at The Merchant Hotel, Belfast
Time: 8 - 10 pm

Promo blurb:
What do you get when you crash Rachel's indie folk self-stylings with a noisemaker, a trumpet player, and an unhinged rhythm section?

Join Rachel as she records a live set with several of Belfast's most exciting musicians, including Barry Cullen (clarinet, electronics), Michael Barkley (trumpet), Anthony Devenney (bass), and others, in a one-off, spontaneously improvised gig.

Read on - and buy your tickets at https://cqaf.ticketsolve.com/shows/126524796/events. Tickets are limited to 75.

PURCHASE OF A TICKET GETS YOU A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD OF THE GIG SOON AFTER THE EVENT.

Calling to mind comparisons with the restless creative spirit of Nick Cave, Rachel Austin’s songwriting rarely comes at the listener from the obvious perspective, by turns beguiling and cajoling its way into the heart. The words are timeless, but the delivery is completely captivating, recalling the swooping melodies of Tim Buckley at his best.

Comparisons can only take you so far, however, as Rachel possesses a stark and creative outlook that is all her own. This is evidenced through her recent fan-funded project, Austin In Austin, which saw her record in Austin Texas with producer Brian Beattie (Daniel Johnston, Okkervil River) and drummer Dony Wynn (Robert Palmer, Robert Plant/Patty Griffin) in November of last year.

UPDATE
Recording of the opening set by BEW!

DOWN BY LAW PRESENTS

VISCERAL ATTACK (album release show) / THE BURNT REYNOLDS / NO MATTER / BEW

AUNTIE ANNIE'S
DUBLIN ROAD
BELFAST

WEDNESDAY 4 APRIL
Doors 8pm
£4

VISCERAL ATTACK
Formed in 2006 and based in Co. Fermanagh, VISCERAL ATTACK has played with bands such as MUNICIPAL WASTE, UNLEASHED, GAMA BOMB, SSS and more. The band has played and toured all over Ireland, England and Scotland. The band's debut EP "V For Viscera"' was released in 2008, and their first full length album "Quick and Severe" was sort-of-released in 2010.

At the start of 2012 the band signed with Belfast label PUNKERAMEA RECORDS to release "Quick and Severe" officially at this gig.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE BURNT REYNOLDS

Combining abrasive jagged guitars with powerful melodies this band makes a strong impact creating an extremely tight, melodic form of rock at times reminiscent of HELMET before briskly moving on to sounds capes normally reserved for ...AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD and RIVAL SCHOOLS.

Already hotly tipped by BBC's ACROSS THE LINE, 2012 will see THE BURNT REYNOLDS on the live circuit as much as possible. With new recordings now firmly under their belt the band is hungry to make its mark on the local music scene and beyond - this is a bad not to be ignored.

NO MATTER

NO MATTER is a Belfast based trio playing fast-paced pop punk which formed in late 2010 from the remains of THE LOBOTOMIES, NUMSKULL, LEAP FOR LENIN and THE DANGERFIELDS. The band's main inspirations are NOFX, ALKALINE TRIO, SCREECHING WEASEL and THE RAMONES. The band is striving to make itsmark having already headlined in London within 6 months of forming, with plans for as many gigs as possible.

"...playing a fun set of catchy tracks, usually based around some nice guitar riffs and Dan's chanting vocals...there's something almost GREEN DAY-esque about them. They also have a very good stage presence and manage to get the crowd laughing more than once" BBC Across The Line

My first live review in a long time was published at AU:

I think I enjoyed the show more than a lot of other people there. Here's a photo of Minotaur Shock holding a MIDI/CC controller, and looking quite relaxed:

Along with Chris Allen and Peter Cullen, I'll be playing a live soundtrack to 'The Wheels of Chance', a silent, black and white film from 1922.

Aln Vs Cln @ Never Records @ Context Gallery

Aln Vs Cln recorded a live improv session in the Context Gallery in Derry/Londonderry/Stroke City as part of the Never Records exhibition. We walked away with some lathe-cut vinyl a CD and a heap of other AV data (including some suspicious VHS from a local charity shop). Lots of DIY instrumentation was used. Frequencies were amplified. Vibrations were felt. Good times were had. Media to follow.

Mp3 From Somewhere There - 24/250411

I was in Canada and played two nights at Somewhere There in Toronto. I played there last year. It changed to a new location. I was very happy to be brought back by the people I played with last year (as well as being amazing drummers, Mark & Germaine are ace cooks too), and also introduced to a host of new people to play with.

Sunday 24
Paul (saxophone)
Emilio Guim (guitar),
Kate Pittman (drums),
Michelangelo Iaffaldano (homemade instruments)
Barry Cullen (amplified objects)

All the mediafire links are to download the files I recorded of the events. All were recorded to a Zoom H1 portable recorder as WAV then converted to mp3 using Audacity apart from the last file which was recorded using my MBP's built-in microphone (unfortunately, the battery ran out on the zoom).

All photos and video footage was taken by Anne-Sophie.
