Cinemandala
brings you the Belfast screening of Never Records 'You are not
Listening', a straight to vinyl music project and international record
shop by New York based artist Ted Riederer, as it happened in Derry,
curated by Theo Sims and filmed by Jason Wyche.
Among the many
artists who adorned Ted's spectral turntable with their noises, Stu
Downes, Mark Garry, Phil Hession and Barry Cullen will follow the film
with live music. And those that haven't yet, Robyn G. Shiels.. and with
order, the house.
Ted and Jason will be in the house and happy to talk NEVER RECORDS.. Entry is free. Pints for the performers are discretionary.
For the next IMPRINT showcase, we have an absolute cracker for you all.
Planet Mu's The Host will be emerging for a unique, live performance of cosmic sounds at The Menagerie on Friday 7th June.
Known in the real world as Barry Lynn, The Host works in a spacey
interzone, using vintage gear to create dramatic panoramas for the open
mind. He works with a unique suite of modern sonics that tumble and waft
in and out of the mix, earthed with strong melodies that take
inspiration from net-age genres while putting an entirely different spin
on them.
This is a rare opportunity to catch The Host live
and surrounded by real hardware so strap on your moon boots and join us
for an evening of shimmering psychedelia.
The
Belfast Sound Map is an open resource that aims at engaging local
communities in capturing everyday sound and hence characterise the
soundscape of the city. We encourage not only the submission of sound
recordings, but also other forms of experiencing and registering sound,
such as text or image. The overall design of this platform facilitates
this multiplicity of approaches, while also allowing participants to
create their own projects. These are presented as separate, individual
layers of recordings within the map.
The
user/listener is also invited to explore the map in various ways,
including an autoplay mode which creates a sequence composed of
different recordings.
The
map serves as a platform for a series of local workshops, in which we
will share with the participants the concepts behind this work,
exploring the rich relationship between sound, place and everyday life.
Place NI hosted a workshop about the project. Participants were given recording equipment and taken on a walk around the centre of Belfast to listen and collect recordings. Afterwards everyone talked about the experience and wrote some extracts which were uploaded to the map.
The first workshop of BUILD/CODE/IMPROVISE/PERFORM was carried out on Saturday 6 April 2013 at Catalyst Arts, Belfast (part of their exhibition, 'Under Construction'). The devices built and bent at the workshop will be used in the other workshops in the series in preparation for an event at SARC as part of the Sonorities Festival.
Here's an advert I found after the event had passed:
After a long and
well-deserved rest in the wake of a quite tremendous Xmas party with
Kwame and the Barrio 54 crew, RESET returns to the Menagerie for our
first heavyweight hoedown of 2013 – Huzzah!!
Topping the bill,
we are delighted to welcome a man who should need little introduction –
to wit, Ireland’s finest producer of electronic music - Barry Lynn, aka
BOXCUTTER.
Following recent performances and releases as The
Host, Barry is dusting off his much-celebrated Boxcutter alias for an
all-vinyl DJ set of choice cuts from his
formidable private collection. Expect an expert blend of quality
underground electronic music, featuring plenty of rare and still
incredible-sounding early Dubstep singles (DMZ, Deep Medi, Tectonic,
Hotflush) a smattering of vintage UK garage, with perhaps the odd jungle
or footwork banger thrown in for good measure. A certified jazz and
funk fanatic, Barry is known for his depth of knowledge and rarefied,
eclectic tastes spanning many genres, so surprises are to be expected!
RESET’s star player, the quite frighteningly-talented KAIDI TATHAM will
also be in the house, performing live keys on a selection of his own
original productions. Kaidi is a multi-instrumentalist, writer and
arranger of rare pedigree who's insanely soulful and wildly dexterous
playing helped to define broken beat, featuring heavily on many of the
key recordings to have emerged from the scene. He’s also a wickedly
entertaining live performer who never fails to put a smile on his
audience’s face. In short, he’s what James Brown might have termed a
“Bad mutha”. Not one to miss!!
Adding yet more weight to the
bill, we’re also chuffed to welcome upcoming Belfast-based beat-boxer
CULL to the table. A regular performer at club nights vinyl combat and
blasters of the universe, he’ll be treating us to a couple of
high-energy, show-stopping live routines, fusing elements of hiphop,
turntablism, dubstep and electro, using only his mouth and a
muthafriggin microphone. WORD!!
Residents Kab Driver and Defcon
will also be spinning a load of sweet-ass trax earlier on in the
evening to get your juices a-flowin’.
PLUS - LIVE psych-tastic visuals from one-man electric light orchestra (and all-round genius) Barry Cullen aka BEW. Woo!!

I had a chance to chat with the technician, check out their great tools, see examples of other makers work, and get suggestions on helpful homework to do before booking some time there to work on prototypes. Inspired.
I was told there are links to useful project PDFs and FLOSS software on the Manchester Fab Lab site. I had downloaded Sketch Up and Eagle CAD oonly a few days before, with the addition of Inkscape (best compatibility for vector based projects) I now have a ever growing amount of things on my to-do/to-learn list.
Have a look at what they do, and think about what they can help you do.
Beginners build a booster unit in one day. No knowledge of physics is required. Learn basic soldering.
In four hours participants will build an amp-slapping boost circuit including: in / out jacks, control pot and bypass switch. Tools are available in the workspace.
Unfortunately the show was cancelled at the last minute due to health issues.
Here's a recording:
This recording is a blend of three short improvisations using the tools which were selected for the show.
ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE (California / Not Not Fun Records) + Barry's Electric Workshop
Friday 27th July Please note - this is an early show! Door: 7.30pm. Show: 8pm - 9.30pm. £5
ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE
Ensemble Economique is the immersive psychedelic sound-world of California’s Brian Pyle. In 2010, Pyle released ‘Psychical' on Not Not Fun (home of L.A. Vampires, Peaking Lights, Sex Worker), a stand-out LP in what turned out to be a landmark year for the label.
In true horror soundtrack style, Pyle's work hones in on tense build-ups to create an atmospheric and sometimes unnerving listen. It's intricate, pattering percussion and noxious analogue ooze invite comparison with Sun Araw, Shackleton and Demdike Stare while charting the dark continent existing only in Pyle’s fevered imagination.
On Psychical: "…this is one of the darkest and most affecting sides of schlock horror we've heard all year." Boomkat On Motion Forever EP: "The reliably excellent Ensemble Economique strikes out into deeper, more mournful territory than ever before, with seriously compelling results" FACT Magazine http://ensembleeconomique.tumblr.com/

BARRY'S ELECTRIC WORKSHOP
Experimental/electronic producer Barry Cullen releases audio and video work under the name BEW (Barry’s Electric Workshop). Part of the Dodgy Stereo collective, Barry blends noise and images from old junk with hi-fi sounds and graphics, trying to find a balance between creating something new and making it fit along with something recycled.
Official blurb: Ten local companies including Accidental Theatre, Wireless Mystery Theatre, Kabosh, Tinderbox and Fishambles perform new fifteen minute plays over two nights. Five plays are performed each evening.
Unofficial spin: Theatre in the dark. Acting. Voices. Foley. Music. Etc.
Promo blurb: What do you get when you crash Rachel's indie folk self-stylings with a noisemaker, a trumpet player, and an unhinged rhythm section?
Join Rachel as she records a live set with several of Belfast's most exciting musicians, including Barry Cullen (clarinet, electronics), Michael Barkley (trumpet), Anthony Devenney (bass), and others, in a one-off, spontaneously improvised gig.
PURCHASE OF A TICKET GETS YOU A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD OF THE GIG SOON AFTER THE EVENT.
Calling to mind comparisons with the restless creative spirit of Nick Cave, Rachel Austin’s songwriting rarely comes at the listener from the obvious perspective, by turns beguiling and cajoling its way into the heart. The words are timeless, but the delivery is completely captivating, recalling the swooping melodies of Tim Buckley at his best.
Comparisons can only take you so far, however, as Rachel possesses a stark and creative outlook that is all her own. This is evidenced through her recent fan-funded project, Austin In Austin, which saw her record in Austin Texas with producer Brian Beattie (Daniel Johnston, Okkervil River) and drummer Dony Wynn (Robert Palmer, Robert Plant/Patty Griffin) in November of last year.
In a bold move representing a modest, but significant, first step towards world domination, we, the RESET collective, are preparing to launch an independent record label, which after many hours of drug-fuelled debate, quasi-monastic soul-searching and scholarly deliberation we have decided to call... *drum roll*… R E S E T !
To mark this momentous occasion we’ll be throwing down the craic gauntlet this Saturday night at the Menagerie, with our first FEELGOOD SOUL-PARTY JAM of 2012. BOO-YA!!
To help us celebrate, we’ve invited Chester-based producer REAL - a prolific young talent with a colouful, exuberant production style – to deliver what promises to be an eminently danceable live set of skewed house and soulful garage.
Brian Greene will also be busting out his considerable live soul chops once again, while Defcon and Kab Driver are apparently planning DJ sets filled with “balls to the wall” party tunes to satisfy the inner Patrick Swayze in all of you.
Expect BROKEN HOUSE, DIRTY FONK, and SPACE VIBEZ galore.
PLUS - Psych-tastic live visuals by the one and only B.E.W.
9.30pm - £5
Come one, come all!!
RST001
The inaugural RESET release is a 9-track mini-album of dub-inflected, cosmic hiphop excursions by DEFCON, entitled IN BINARY SHRINES. Exclusive advance copies will be available to purchase at the gig on Saturday in the form of a limited edition digipak CD, adorned with some propa natty psychedelic artwork:
Last year I helped out in a study at SARC. Some of the PhDstudents gave me a novel instrument to play with and asked me to keep a diary of my experience with it as I learned more about it by using it daily. Lots of other people took part.
Here are a host of videos of people playing the Pulley Synth.
Ikue Mori is one of the most requested and original voices in the laptop music scene. Maja Ratkje work straddles noise improvisation, vocal performance and composition. Anyone who knows the music and range of either artist will know just what a formidable prospect this pairing is.
“Ratkje’s startling talents amid a seething web of symphonic strings and provides notice that a new sonic visionary has arrived” CD Universe
Alongside the festival the Two Thousand + symposium will be held. Check the 'Full Program' link on the Sonorities site for further information (download/print version not yet available).
