Belfast Sound Map / Sound Walk 100413

Belfast Sound Map
The Belfast Sound Map is an open resource that aims at engaging local communities in capturing everyday sound and hence characterise the soundscape of the city. We encourage not only the submission of sound recordings, but also other forms of experiencing and registering sound, such as text or image. The overall design of this platform facilitates this multiplicity of approaches, while also allowing participants to create their own projects. These are presented as separate, individual layers of recordings within the map.
The user/listener is also invited to explore the map in various ways, including an autoplay mode which creates a sequence composed of different recordings.
The map serves as a platform for a series of local workshops, in which we will share with the participants the concepts behind this work, exploring the rich relationship between sound, place and everyday life.
The Belfast Sound Map was designed by Pedro Rebelo, Rui Chaves, Matilde Meireles and Aoghus McEvoy in collaboration with Max Stein and is maintained by the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Queen's University Belfast. The Belfast Sound Map was first exhibited at the Metropolitan Art Centre (MAC) in 2012 in the context of the Sounds of the City project.
Made possible with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund

Place NI hosted a workshop about the project. Participants were given recording equipment and taken on a walk around the centre of Belfast to listen and collect recordings. Afterwards everyone talked about the experience and wrote some extracts which were uploaded to the map.

BUILD Workshop @ Catalyst Arts 060413

The first workshop of BUILD/CODE/IMPROVISE/PERFORM was carried out on Saturday 6 April 2013 at Catalyst Arts, Belfast (part of their exhibition, 'Under Construction'). The devices built and bent at the workshop will be used in the other workshops in the series in preparation for an event at SARC as part of the Sonorities Festival.

Here's an advert I found after the event had passed:

Here's a short demo video the Poor Man's Synth:

Pulley Synth Blog

Last year I helped out in a study at SARC. Some of the PhD students gave me a novel instrument to play with and asked me to keep a diary of my experience with it as I learned more about it by using it daily. Lots of other people took part.

Here are a host of videos of people playing the Pulley Synth.

Sonorities 2012

March 23-27 SARC (Sonic Arts Research Centre) @ Queen's University Belfast will be holding it's annual Sonorities festival. This year's title is The Body's Music. Go to their site and have a look at the program; there are plenty of interesting links to information about the artists that will be performing.

Alongside the festival the Two Thousand + symposium will be held. Check the 'Full Program' link on the Sonorities site for further information (download/print version not yet available).

Circuit Bending Workshop & Open Jack Night 120311

Here's a fun way to spend a day. Maybe I'll see you there?
Cut 'n paste info:
Circuit Bending Workshop & Open Jack Event - 12th March
@ Catalyst Arts, 5 College Court, Belfast.

Circuit Bending: Learn how to make noise making instruments out of toys and household electronics. We will provide all the materials, you can take home a new instrument - Or stay for Open Jack in the evening and premiere your new instrument!

Limited spaces - Booking / enquiry: qubears@gmail.com

I heard an interesting distinction made between bending and hacking:

Bending is when the technology is tampered with by a novice who doesn't know what they are doing - they are exploring and finding modifications by chance.

Hacking is when technology is approached by someone with knowledge and experience, who has an idea that they would like to put into practice.

UPDATE:
Here's a little clip of the workshop:

SARC

I've been invited to play one of my pieces at SARC his week by Martin Byrne (Dr Lilt). This is quite a big deal for me as it's probably the best soundsystems on the island (if not the best definately one of the top five?), in a centre for academic excellence (I don't fit?) but also a place where many sucessful contemporaries have performed(most recently heard Paulene Oliveros perform Droniphonia there).

It's an afternoon event, free to the public.

If you want to come hear our music moving around the rooms' 40 (approx?) speakers. Join us, and say hello.
