He works with a unique suite of modern sonics that tumble and waft in and out of the mix, earthed with strong melodies that take inspiration from net-age genres while putting an entirely different spin on them.

This is a rare opportunity to catch The Host live and surrounded by real hardware so strap on your moon boots and join us for an evening of shimmering psychedelia.

In preparation here's the latest IMPRINT podcast featuring Barry Lynn in The Host mode.

Reset 230213

RESET
Sat 23rd Feb - BOXCUTTER, KAIDI TATHAM, Live Beatboxing from CULL, KAB DRIVER, DEFCON. Gonna be massive!!!
Poster by Stephen Maurice Graham http://400facts.tumblr.com/

After a long and well-deserved rest in the wake of a quite tremendous Xmas party with Kwame and the Barrio 54 crew, RESET returns to the Menagerie for our first heavyweight hoedown of 2013 – Huzzah!!

Topping the bill, we are delighted to welcome a man who should need little introduction – to wit, Ireland’s finest producer of electronic music - Barry Lynn, aka BOXCUTTER.

Following recent performances and releases as The Host, Barry is dusting off his much-celebrated Boxcutter alias for an all-vinyl DJ set of choice cuts from his formidable private collection. Expect an expert blend of quality underground electronic music, featuring plenty of rare and still incredible-sounding early Dubstep singles (DMZ, Deep Medi, Tectonic, Hotflush) a smattering of vintage UK garage, with perhaps the odd jungle or footwork banger thrown in for good measure. A certified jazz and funk fanatic, Barry is known for his depth of knowledge and rarefied, eclectic tastes spanning many genres, so surprises are to be expected!

RESET’s star player, the quite frighteningly-talented KAIDI TATHAM will also be in the house, performing live keys on a selection of his own original productions. Kaidi is a multi-instrumentalist, writer and arranger of rare pedigree who's insanely soulful and wildly dexterous playing helped to define broken beat, featuring heavily on many of the key recordings to have emerged from the scene. He’s also a wickedly entertaining live performer who never fails to put a smile on his audience’s face. In short, he’s what James Brown might have termed a “Bad mutha”. Not one to miss!!

Adding yet more weight to the bill, we’re also chuffed to welcome upcoming Belfast-based beat-boxer CULL to the table. A regular performer at club nights vinyl combat and blasters of the universe, he’ll be treating us to a couple of high-energy, show-stopping live routines, fusing elements of hiphop, turntablism, dubstep and electro, using only his mouth and a muthafriggin microphone. WORD!!

Residents Kab Driver and Defcon will also be spinning a load of sweet-ass trax earlier on in the evening to get your juices a-flowin’.

PLUS - LIVE psych-tastic visuals from one-man electric light orchestra (and all-round genius) Barry Cullen aka BEW. Woo!!

COME ONE, COME ALL!

VISCERAL ATTACK
Formed in 2006 and based in Co. Fermanagh, VISCERAL ATTACK has played with bands such as MUNICIPAL WASTE, UNLEASHED, GAMA BOMB, SSS and more. The band has played and toured all over Ireland, England and Scotland. The band's debut EP "V For Viscera"' was released in 2008, and their first full length album "Quick and Severe" was sort-of-released in 2010.

At the start of 2012 the band signed with Belfast label PUNKERAMEA RECORDS to release "Quick and Severe" officially at this gig.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE BURNT REYNOLDS

Combining abrasive jagged guitars with powerful melodies this band makes a strong impact creating an extremely tight, melodic form of rock at times reminiscent of HELMET before briskly moving on to sounds capes normally reserved for ...AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD and RIVAL SCHOOLS.

Already hotly tipped by BBC's ACROSS THE LINE, 2012 will see THE BURNT REYNOLDS on the live circuit as much as possible. With new recordings now firmly under their belt the band is hungry to make its mark on the local music scene and beyond - this is a bad not to be ignored.

NO MATTER

NO MATTER is a Belfast based trio playing fast-paced pop punk which formed in late 2010 from the remains of THE LOBOTOMIES, NUMSKULL, LEAP FOR LENIN and THE DANGERFIELDS. The band's main inspirations are NOFX, ALKALINE TRIO, SCREECHING WEASEL and THE RAMONES. The band is striving to make itsmark having already headlined in London within 6 months of forming, with plans for as many gigs as possible.

"...playing a fun set of catchy tracks, usually based around some nice guitar riffs and Dan's chanting vocals...there's something almost GREEN DAY-esque about them. They also have a very good stage presence and manage to get the crowd laughing more than once" BBC Across The Line

RESET Records Launch 240311

From the Facebook Event page:

The Menagerie, 130 University Street, Belfast

In a bold move representing a modest, but significant, first step towards world domination, we, the RESET collective, are preparing to launch an independent record label, which after many hours of drug-fuelled debate, quasi-monastic soul-searching and scholarly deliberation we have decided to call... *drum roll*… R E S E T !

To mark this momentous occasion we’ll be throwing down the craic gauntlet this Saturday night at the Menagerie, with our first FEELGOOD SOUL-PARTY JAM of 2012. BOO-YA!!

To help us celebrate, we’ve invited Chester-based producer REAL - a prolific young talent with a colouful, exuberant production style – to deliver what promises to be an eminently danceable live set of skewed house and soulful garage.

Real Soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/real

Brian Greene will also be busting out his considerable live soul chops once again, while Defcon and Kab Driver are apparently planning DJ sets filled with “balls to the wall” party tunes to satisfy the inner Patrick Swayze in all of you.

Expect BROKEN HOUSE, DIRTY FONK, and SPACE VIBEZ galore.

PLUS - Psych-tastic live visuals by the one and only B.E.W.

9.30pm - £5

Come one, come all!!

RST001

The inaugural RESET release is a 9-track mini-album of dub-inflected, cosmic hiphop excursions by DEFCON, entitled IN BINARY SHRINES. Exclusive advance copies will be available to purchase at the gig on Saturday in the form of a limited edition digipak CD, adorned with some propa natty psychedelic artwork:

Aln Vs Cln @ Never Records @ Context Gallery

Aln Vs Cln recorded a live improv session in the Context Gallery in Derry/Londonderry/Stroke City as part of the Never Records exhibition. We walked away with some lathe-cut vinyl a CD and a heap of other AV data (including some suspicious VHS from a local charity shop). Lots of DIY instrumentation was used. Frequencies were amplified. Vibrations were felt. Good times were had. Media to follow.

Pressure's 1st Birthday MARK ARCHER (Mark II / ex-Altern 8)

Saturday, March 26 at 9:30pm - March 27 at 2:00am
The Bunatee, Queen's University Students' Union

Pressure proudly present MARK ARCHER ex-ALTERN 8, Nexus21, Balkan Vinyl)

Mark Archer started his Production career in 1988 when along with Dean Meredith, he ventured up to the newly opened Blue Chip Studio's in his hometown of Stafford.Starting off as a hip hop/sample house group called Rhythm Mode D, they recorded a few tracks for the studio's own label before branching out with different styles including acid house and techno a...mongst others. Archer was a founder member of Bizarre inc... before starting up a new project under the name Nexus 21 as well as the side project Altern 8.
Altern 8 crashed the UK charts in 1991 with ‘Infiltrate 202’ and ‘Activ-8 (come with me)’, two chaotic slices of hardcore, the latter reaching number 3. They were aided in their chart aspirations by the circulation of fictitious press stories concerning their alleged activities, which included promoting the decongestant Vicks Vapo Rub, which, it was claimed, heightened the effects of Ecstasy; and standing as local candidates for the 1993 General Election.
Their live events were also designed as eye catching performances, where the band donned RAF chemical warfare suits and dust masks. They were aided by their resident dancers and MC MkOne, in the case of their gig at Stafford’s Bingley Hall, an actual shaman. His job was to cleanse the venue of its ‘rock n roll’, prior to performance.
Additional vinyl outings included the ‘Overload ep’ (1990), ‘Frequency’ (10,000 copies of which were on sale for a single day only and written solely by Archer), and another top ten hit, ’Evapor 8’, followed by ’Hypnotic St8’, the LP ‘Full on Mask Hysteria’ (number 10 in the LP charts).
The protagonists long maintained that this was a temporary diversion from their main project, Nexus 21, and confirmed this by releasing a ‘final’ Altern 8 single, ‘Everybody’, in June 1993.
Mark Archer has gone on to form Slo-Moshun, a duo of Archer and Danny Taurus from Stoke on Trent. They released ‘Bells of New York’, one of the biggest club hits of early 1994, breaking the main top 30 on the back of its house/hip hop undulations. However, some of the Altern 8 methodology remained – this time the scam was to trick everyone into thinking it was a US import.
Archer has gone on to record tracks as diverse as Nu Skool Breaks for Rennie Pilgrem’s label TCR, under the pseudonym ‘Mr Nex’, and remixed ‘Edzy’s’ – ‘Do it till you burn’ on Strictly Rhythm.
2007 was a return to the sound of Nexus 21 with the solo release of the 'Songs for einna EP' on the Black Dogs new label offshoot DS93, the ep sold out before it's release date and has had collectors paying big money for the sought after vinyl only release.
The EP was followed earlier this year with the release on new label Mutate of the 'Ring of Gyges EP' which follows on from the DS93 release in style.
Mark has continued to dj throught his career in various styles but mainly on the 'Oldskool' scene playing classics from the golden era of 'rave' 1988-1992.
