Here's a playlist of (most of) the groups/acts/artists mentioned between the covers:

NB: not all groups included are "good" examples. Some serve as a warning.

Eomac - Eomac EP

Eomac
Eomac EP
ACROPLANE RECORDINGS

http://www.eomac.net/

After listening to the teasers of the latest release from Dublin-based Eomac the full release is now on regular rotation. A range of clean and dirty sounds from the digital and analogue realms of sound draw the listener in; old school rave bleeps play a pattern over twisting crackles, as filtered drums fill up space in the groove. Rolling along with occasional woozy samples and dub motifs, it is an infectious shuffle that works a fresh take on garage by keeping a raw edge to the sounds.

Second track 'Drumutic' is more of a heavy swinging number. The sound set stays in the same dirty territory, but with more of a grime feel. 'Slide FX' starts with a bouncing beat and swirling reverb sounds before the arpeggios worm their way into the mix, rising up and crumbling over it all.

'It's Nice To Be Where Nobody Is' taps into a dark tapestry of dreamy tones to make a haunting downbeat piece which drifts at a much different pace to the other tracks, but it works well in the tracklisting which helps the release as a complete listening experience.

Final track 'The Feeling' gets tougher with a clipped kick gating overdriven pads to make for a thumping outro, that will doubtlessly do damage on a big soundsystem.

Overall this is a pumping release, with tight drum patterns, dirty synths, and healthy helpings of skewed 2-step throughout. Modern electronica for feet and head.

9/10
KEY TRACKS: 'APACHE', 'SLIDE FX', 'THE FEELING'

ELECTRONIC IRELAND is a new group, setup on Soundcloud, Mixcloud and Vimeo (with more to come) to act as a one stop shop for anyone wishing to promote any of the great stuff coming out of this wee Island of yours. MN is a music collective so we can only really use this site to spread the word on the music that it’s members are passionate about, but we’re aware there’s so much more going on that we don’t cover. This group is to cater for anyone who wants to promote the efforts of anyone who’s flying the flag for Irish electronic music.

Two 'wildlife documentaries' by Nicholas Keogh will be shown as part of the group exhibition 'Disconnected' in the Golden Thread Gallery in Belfast this Friday. I helped with recording sound and other miscellaneous tech things.

Don't Touch That Dial

Here's a tumblr worth visiting more than once: Old fashioned and beautiful. The range of different types of sound quality is charming. You can make quite a sound-clash by strategically using the play/pause buttons on several clips at a time.

Of their content they say:
"All programs are considered to be in Public Domain unless noted otherwise."

Their 'Random Program' button can lead in interesting directions.

From MeFi:
"...is a simple tumblr that collects radio shows and advertisements now in the public domain. The archive is pretty great..."

Ecker 140510

Ecker will be at the Menagerie this Friday. Bloom will be missing from the resident DJ team (off to play a set in Manchester) but the record collections of Dublin DJ/producers Colz and Thatboytim will surely help compensate for his absence. As ever I'll be in the corner by the soundman playing with videos and probably pointing a camera at something.

Bin Disco

Nicky Keogh's Bin Disco was out on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon for the entertainment and bemusement of Belfast. I made a selection of Balkan and Tropicalia greats for the playlist. It was fun seeing the expressions of people passing by.

On the outside it looks like any other bin, but the interior is as plush as can be, with beautiful, cushioned fabric and a chandelier. If you had a bin disco what music would you play in it?

Benedict LA - Tall Ships 140809

I played guitar with Benedict LA last night in Lavery's Beer Tent at the Odyssey as part of the entertainment at the Tall Ships. We were the last band of the evening playing from 8.30 - 9PM. The weather was pretty crap, but people hung around listened and hooted for more.

Benedict LA is the music of my friend Paul Dixon. He previously made music under the name Soviet Kings. I made a BEW remix for him a while ago.
