IMPRINT Presents: The Host (Planet Mu) Live Set 070613

IMPRINT Presents:
THE HOST (live)
+ IMPRINT DJs
+ Visuals by B.E.W

Friday 7th June 2013
The Menagerie
£5.00

For the next IMPRINT showcase, we have an absolute cracker for you all.

Planet Mu's The Host will be emerging for a unique, live performance of cosmic sounds at The Menagerie on Friday 7th June.

Known in the real world as Barry Lynn, The Host works in a spacey interzone, using vintage gear to create dramatic panoramas for the open mind. He works with a unique suite of modern sonics that tumble and waft in and out of the mix, earthed with strong melodies that take inspiration from net-age genres while putting an entirely different spin on them.

This is a rare opportunity to catch The Host live and surrounded by real hardware so strap on your moon boots and join us for an evening of shimmering psychedelia.

In preparation here's the latest IMPRINT podcast featuring Barry Lynn in The Host mode.

There's quite a lot going on there. It's a bit messy. I like it.

Pressure present Oneman 100710

Pressure had Oneman (Rinse FM/Radio1) over at the Black Box.
They played a great bunch of records and plenty of people got up and did a bit of shaking
(the soundsystem helped make things dance even if they didn't choose to).

The last ECKER at the Menagerie Bar.
End of an era. It was good while it lasted.
Here's a video of some people having a good time
(crowd surfing - if you watch carelessly).

4 interactive installation at Bjcem 2009 in Skopie (arduino based) from AlluvioneMediatica on Vimeo.

Found here. Happening here.

If only I had the time and money I'd like to visit here. Mostly because I think that this would make me a happy chap.

Although I know I should be in my workshop building something, I feel it's more likely I'll just watch a few videos between shifts as my holiday approaches.

cyberbrothers.tv

Cyberbrothers have a nice site. Featuring videos from onedotzero and many others. I've found lots of inspiring things to see and hear there.

Another nifty AV site I found that VJs might find interesting and useful is Videopong which allows users to upload, download and remix other people's/team's creations and it uses creative commons licences.

Promoter Vs VJ

Being a VJ is fun. I enjoy the challenge of getting the pictures in my head to appear on a screen.

Hours spent cutting up magazines and celluloid, dubbing tapes, sifting through films, hoping to chance upon an inspiring few frames, installing plug-ins, trial and error sessions with numerous codecs, making an indecent amount of drinks coasters in the bid to find suitable disc manufacturers, finding what does and doesn't work by torturing anyone with a free few minutes to watch my latest output (the result of many hours producing and rendering files) can leave anyone physically drained, but, occasionally it's very satisfying - the rush of adrenalin I feel when the audio and video work together is rather special - but it's striving to improve that makes me continue, .

It has taken me a long time to become familiar with the file formats, pieces of software and hardware. Add to that the many opportunities to practice my patter with promoters, musicians, DJs, bar and club staff and you've got years worth of happily learned experience that I'm usually happy to share with anyone who's interested / will tolerate me dribbling on about my pet subject.

However, it's not all ruptured retinas, broken backs, moth-ridden pockets and lack of a social life - sometimes you can be invited to take part in glamorous projects involving REAL SUPERSTAR DJs and people with passion about their projects, and vision!

I can't take credit for the following video (thanks vjforums) but it reminds me of a number of occasions when people don't want to understand the word, "no".

I think I'll continue to enjoy finding new tools and techniques on my own time, even if it means I don't make it with taste-making, trail-blazing, scene-leading firebrands that rely on people jumping to (be taken advantage of) their call to arms!

BTW - The chaps at Ecker are great to work with - come hear the contents of their record bags and hard drives at the Menagerie this Friday.

One Way to Make a MIDI Controller...

Livid Instruments are now offering a kit enabling the DIY enthusiast to create their own customised MIDI controller (cue a, "YAY!" from all digital AV enthusiasts who have looked at what's on the market and thought, "almost perfect, if only they'd included a..."). Have a look at the parts on their site and take a few minutes to watch their video:

It's interesting to follow how others are getting along with their builds.

From the Vaults to the Future...

The more I learn, the more I find there is to learn. Thankfully, I have a healthy appetite.

I stumbled across this version of history which is worth a read. Thanks Le Collagiste.

Another search / stumble session found this video which gives an interesting example of how the tools used can shape the quality of the end creation.
FAIRLIGHT!

When I first started becoming interested in live video work using PC the two pieces of software that seemed most attractive were VJamm and Motion Dive. I hear there's a new version of MD almost ready for distribution. Can't wait to give it a spin!

...and for those who are really on top of their AV game - here's a link to a couple of HD loops - stick those in your app of choice and see if your system can handle it!

Hot Flush NIght - Menagerie - 131109

From Resident Advisor:
"Fresh from his residency in Berlin's legendary Berghain nightclub, dubstep pioneer Scuba along with fellow label artist, Sigha, is set to play an exclusive set in Belfast’s top underground venue, The Mangerie on Friday, 13th November courtesy of Rudimentary Records.

Renowned for his innovative approach, Scuba is a DJ at the forefront of the dubstep/techno alliance. Having fset up the influential 'Hotflush' imprint, he has released tracks by artists such as, Mount Kimbie, Benga, Joy Orbison and Boxcutter. Talking about his label Scuba, aka Paul Rose says ”All we’ve tried to do...is make sure the full spectrum of the music is heard.”

Scuba’s music often uses unusual sounds, atypical of the dubstep genre. His seminal release, ‘A Mutual Antipathy’ combined massive, wobbling sub-bass, and elements of four to the floor, Basic Channel-style dub techno and was a hit with fans of dubstep and techno alike.

Support on the night comes from Sigha. London-based newcomer releasing
tracks on Hotflush, Immerse and Lost Souls. Recently featured on Mary - Anne Hobbs’ Radio One Show.

Sigha’s sound blends elements of Dubstep, Techno and Minimal in both his productions and his DJ sets. His First Release (Bruised/ Expansions) dropped on Hotflush Two in early 2009.

Also featuring on the night will be Rudimentary residents who will be celebrating there first release as a newly formed record label, with the first release due November. The Ep will feature tunes from new-comer Yoru.

Bass hungry steppers will delight in this opportunity to catch some of the best in the business on their home turf. Not to be missed"

I've been asked to do visuals - sure 'nuff ; 'n' yes I do...
