Don't Touch That Dial

Here's a tumblr worth visiting more than once: Old fashioned and beautiful. The range of different types of sound quality is charming. You can make quite a sound-clash by strategically using the play/pause buttons on several clips at a time.

Of their content they say:
"All programs are considered to be in Public Domain unless noted otherwise."

Their 'Random Program' button can lead in interesting directions.

From MeFi:
"...is a simple tumblr that collects radio shows and advertisements now in the public domain. The archive is pretty great..."

BEW - Queen's Radio - The Attic Session

This Monday night I'll be playing a live set live on the airwaves after being invited over to the Queen's Radio studio by Matt Hazley.

I've had a few of my things played over there in the past - I've made three extended (approx 20 - 30 mins) studio collages for him in the past, and now i'm in the neighbourhood, and will do it in person without the luxury of doing a repaitive edit if I make a mistake.

Exciting.

Past shows can be downloaded using these links:

History of Electronic Music

Anyone who has chatted to me about music probably knows that I started enjoying music from a young age. It started to become more important when I discovered heavy metal (thanks to a big sister playing tapes very loudly). I then became interested in electronic music (thanks to the Chart Show and it's various charts on Saturday mornings) which led me to taking unwanted bits of consumer electronics from skips and playing with the parts whilst drooling over a book (bible?) by Dr. Ronald Pellegrino and listening to records from Belfast's Central Library.

I know that there are a few who follow the links I post here so if you share my love of electronic sound you may be interested in the following.

The Tone Generation. - A series of twelve, half-hour-long programmes. Each focusing on a country or device that had a significant contribution to the history and/or development of electronic music.

Electrolight - A series of six, half-hour-long programmes. Each focusing on a different decade. programme one starts with the 1950's (WARNING - contains seductive sonovox).

Thanks to the contributors to the Microsound mailing list who brought these to my attention.

Getachew Mekuria & The Ex 080608

I've been really busy of late so the order of the events I've attended and the reports on here are not matching up in the way I'd like them to, but that's no problem as there are probably no readers anyway.

So, I've been to a traditional Czech wedding (congratulations to Maria and Jirka) with all the dulcimer fun that entails.

There were numerous goodbye sessions. Cheerio to all the good people I've met and worked with in and around Brno.

Jean-Mi bought Sophie and I tickets to go and see Getachew Mekuria & The Ex in a new venue called 6 par 4 in Laval (between Rennes and Le Mans) and we had a great time. Non-stop dancing all the way through.

The end result was a crowd of wobbly-kneed people with huge grins on their faces.

The first video I shot was a lot more steady in comparrison to the others, which got more shakey as the evening went on and the dancing became more wild. The videos on my youtube account were all compressed with VirtualDub using the DivX codec, the audio was left in it's original mono state.

High life in Laval.

In other news I've been working on a remix for Ex-Magician (the wonderful track 'Plan Retrieval') and another more poppy remix for Soviet Kings (the indie whisper of 'wiggle'). I've just taken on another from Rudeboy Ridd'em, I can't wait to get started. Some sub bass and twitching static ahead.

The guys on the 'Feed Me Weird Things' show played one of the tracks from the BEW - Dubs EP. I missed it initially, but they put the whole session up for download. If you want to know more try visiting flirtfm, or their myspace.

BBC - ATL

Apparantly the guys over at BBC Northern Ireland, specifically on the ATL (Across The Line) show found my ep online and gave it a listen and decided to play it over the air - good news.

I think it's encouraging to find that they're out there sifting through the rather head-swimmingly huge amount of music on the net and giving it a try, and not just playing the promos that come to their desk...these guys work!

If you want to hear which on they chose, follow the link to their podcast:

Radio Mix.

I made another BEW mix of material for Queen's Radio (Attic session). If you fancy listening the mp3 is available here.

There are a range of other mixes available from these sessions, all of which are high quality. They are available on the site of the man who co-hosts the show Matt Hazley. Go and check out his site, imprint this on your mind.

In other news I've been bashing together a little batch of Christmas tunes for my work party. I've been told people want/expect to dance. This means I feel like censoring myself a little and not weirding out too much with the filters.

I've basicly taken a couple of MIDI files and put some VSTi and breaks on them. You can hear a demo here.

BEW - prague

Gig confirmed for the Saturday the 28th April at crossclub Prague. I'm quite excited about playing a show in a new venue in a new city. This gives me the urge to finish the tunes I've been working on and testing them.

In other news the remix of Masterbot I made a few weeks back shall be included on Acroplane's compilation - available soon.

I found two old radios beside a bin today. Only tested one - it works fine, will get power sorted for the other tomorrow. The follow up to the analogue crackle of the Dark Wheeze EP can't be far away...

The Attic Sessions: BEW

Matt Hazley over at No Clarity is now hosting the last mix I mad for Queen's Radio.
Go there and download it if you like.

New tunes are being crafted at the moment. More breakbeat stuff with a heavy chiptunes flavour.I was teaching Adam some tricks with PC music-making. Fun was had.

We worked step by step through making a sample to adding a beat and bass to various audio warping. I showed him what to do on my machine and he copied on his. I imagine that our end results should be interesting to listen to when we're both finished with our versions of that tune.
