Eomac - Eomac EP

Eomac
Eomac EP
ACROPLANE RECORDINGS

http://www.eomac.net/

After listening to the teasers of the latest release from Dublin-based Eomac the full release is now on regular rotation. A range of clean and dirty sounds from the digital and analogue realms of sound draw the listener in; old school rave bleeps play a pattern over twisting crackles, as filtered drums fill up space in the groove. Rolling along with occasional woozy samples and dub motifs, it is an infectious shuffle that works a fresh take on garage by keeping a raw edge to the sounds.

Second track 'Drumutic' is more of a heavy swinging number. The sound set stays in the same dirty territory, but with more of a grime feel. 'Slide FX' starts with a bouncing beat and swirling reverb sounds before the arpeggios worm their way into the mix, rising up and crumbling over it all.

'It's Nice To Be Where Nobody Is' taps into a dark tapestry of dreamy tones to make a haunting downbeat piece which drifts at a much different pace to the other tracks, but it works well in the tracklisting which helps the release as a complete listening experience.

Final track 'The Feeling' gets tougher with a clipped kick gating overdriven pads to make for a thumping outro, that will doubtlessly do damage on a big soundsystem.

Overall this is a pumping release, with tight drum patterns, dirty synths, and healthy helpings of skewed 2-step throughout. Modern electronica for feet and head.

9/10
KEY TRACKS: 'APACHE', 'SLIDE FX', 'THE FEELING'

Deadman's Ghost - The Broken Zoetrope

Deadman, now renamed Deadman's Ghost has released a new LP on Umor-Rex featuring a bew remix. Here's the promo text:

The Broken Zoetrope is the debut album of Deadman’s Ghost (formerly Deadman), the project lead by Belfast musician Jason Mills. Released on transparent limited edition vinyl and digital format, it features four new compositions produced in collaboration with sound engineer David Baxter (aka Kab Driver) and four remixes by Northern Irish electronica artists.

The cinematic scope and stylistic experimentation which was acclaimed by reviewers of Cerebral Frontier, drawing comparisons to Beck and David Holmes, is further refined on The Broken Zoetrope. Post-rock instrumentation and electronic soundscapes coalesce with all manner of other ingredients; samples of random people recollecting their dreams and nightmares, shuffling funk drum breaks, apocalyptic lyrics and overdriven pop hooks burst out of the speakers with sub-bass energy. On the flipside, remixes of Cerebral Frontier tracks by Defcon, Barry’s Electric Workshop, T-Polar and The Crimson Underground span from blissed-out electronica to dark, brooding psychedelia. Instruments and vocals from the original songs are processed and used as a catalyst for exploring new sonic territories.

Various Artists - A Gentle Introduction, Mixed by Renick Bell

Various Artists - A Gentle Introduction, Mixed by Renick Bell is a 'sampler' of the type of music you'll find at the3rd2nd.
Renick wrote: "
Sometimes I want to introduce people in a general way to what we are doing at the3rd2nd.com. I have never been able to comfortably say “listen to this one thing we put out, and then you will understand what we are about.” Jason and I talked about doing some mixes of the material on the site, and I think that is just what we have needed to demonstrate in a broad way where we have been. This mix is intended to be the beginning of a series of mixes presenting panoramas of the music here.

This mix remains not-quite-representative of our releases. I've deliberately chosen some of the sweeter, kinder tracks, though the audience might not find it exactly sweet or kind. Still, these tracks show all of us experimenting and improvising with electronic music in our studios with sounds which are, relative to other noises we make, gentle. Drones, glitches, noise, lots of instruments, and long hours with microphones and in front of computers are condensed into 64 minutes of what I think may be, for some, our more approachable side.

All of the tracks, with the exception of “Seed Study 05”, can be found in their original form on this site. The mix includes tracks from a majority of the releases on this site. Please download them as well to see how they fit into their respective releases.

This is a studio mix done in Ardour on a Linux computer, not a live one, but I've mostly avoided messing with the contents of the tracks themselves. I tried to mix and layer them in a way that I felt would take a listener on a journey which builds to some intensity and moves into a wide open space. It feels to me that we are concerned with transformations, so I wanted to let one track transform into the next one smoothly and naturally.

It also became clear to me when doing this mix that we are largely into making numbered sequences, right down to the name of our site. As our collective name implies changing the sequence, I hope this resequenced mix of some of our releases will serve as a gentle introduction, inviting listeners into the other works on this site.

Mp3 From Somewhere There - 24/250411

I was in Canada and played two nights at Somewhere There in Toronto. I played there last year. It changed to a new location. I was very happy to be brought back by the people I played with last year (as well as being amazing drummers, Mark & Germaine are ace cooks too), and also introduced to a host of new people to play with.

All the mediafire links are to download the files I recorded of the events. All were recorded to a Zoom H1 portable recorder as WAV then converted to mp3 using Audacity apart from the last file which was recorded using my MBP's built-in microphone (unfortunately, the battery ran out on the zoom).

All photos and video footage was taken by Anne-Sophie.

Distroboto + BBQ VoL. 2

Distroboto

Old cigarette vending machines which now sell art; three inch DCs and DVDs, buttons, cassette tapes, books, zines, comix. I found these machines at Casa Del Popolo and La Salla Rosa whilst enjoying the Suoni Pel Il Popolo festival.

Some products are dispensed without packaging (cassettes), others (discs etc) in remixed cigarette packaging, or in little parcels made of blocks of corrugated plastic (maybe cut from old election adverts) wrapped in puppy-print cellophane - the machines have boxes on top for you to leave the packaging to be recycled, or submit your own piece of art for consideration.

I bought numerous pretty little things from these machines, both for myself and as little gifts. Here is one I'm sharing with you, a mix tape fit for Summer.

BBQ VoL . 2 (2009)

Side A
King Kurtis - Memphis Soul Stew
Clarence Wheeler - Broasted or Fried
Lonnie Youngblood - Soul Food
Soul Smoochers - Black Pepper
South Central Avenue Municipal Blues Band
- Bowl of Soul
Jimmy Castor - Hamhocks Espagnol
Laura Lee - Crumbs Off The Table
Raynel Winglas - BBQ Ribs
Freddie King - Hot Tomato
Rufus Thomas - Soul Food

Side B
Pazant Bros, - Greasy Greens
Bohannon - Red Bone
Ramsey Lewis - Jungle Strut
Billy Reed & The STreet People
- Grease Piece
Brother Jack McDuff - Hot Barbecue
Count Yates and His Rhythm Crusaders
- At The Soul-In
David Diggs - Chew Baby Chew
Robert Ward & the Ohio Untouchables
- Hot Stuff

Porcelain Minotaurs - Locust Halo

Local netlabel Acroplane have moved onto a new phase. In the past all their releases were free downloads. From now on the plan is to release paid and unpaid for releases. I think this new direction should be supported by all.

I've been enjoying high quality releases from their stable (and producing some too) for years and I think it's time to give a little love back to the label that has done more than many others to publish the vast amount of talent in the experimental, electronic and digital realm of music, often sadly overlooked (or economically unviable) music projects active across the globe.

Here's their press release:
"artist: Porcelain Minotaurs
catalogue no.: ACPR001
release date: 25.01.10
*NOW AVAILABLE* The 1st release in Acroplane Recordings' new line of releases comes from Porcelain Minotaurs; the new project from Jason Kohnen of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. Dark Dubstep and Breaks, heavy bass, ethnic drums and haunting vocals from Charlotte Cegarra sit alongside varied instrumentation and interludes of jazz/drone experimentalism in this darkly unique 4 tracker."

Here's a review by Matt from ImprintThisOnYourMind

I got mine from Boomkat, but it's also available from Juno, Addictech, What People Play, iTunes,
