BEW - DJ and LIVE - Saturday - 040709

ELECTRONIC CRECHE: B. E. W. / 4 JUL 09 / 2:00 PM / / ULSTER HALL / FREE

I learned a lot about Resolume Avenue last weekend. I got my Korg NanoKontrol and QWERTY keyboard mapped up. The shows were a success.

Next on the horizon is a two-hour DJ set in the Ulster Hall as part of the Trans Belfast Festival with a special live show later that night as a fundraiser for this year's Oscillations.

Vinyl to Sample - Stylophone

I've decided to share some old chunks of vinyl. I've put up links to ZIPs containing the mp3 files and scans. Hopefully you'll get a few minutes enjoyment listening to this material. If you feel inspired and use it in a remix, let me hear it.

I imagine the inclusion of Rolf Harris on track one should make this worth the download for most people. However if you've got a soft spot for old fashioned organs you might give the tracks from side 2 a play too. Nothing like playing Christmas carols in the office to ensure your co-workers get about their jobs with smiles on their faces, eh?

A few things to bear in mind: These are old discs from charity shops, not mint condition collectors items, you're getting them for free, and this is the dodgy stereo blog, so don't complain about sound quality.

The Linguists

I have an interest in language. I have some experience as an English teacher and I've read and learnt a little about language acquisition. I understand how important language is in shaping our cultures and the ways in which we view the world we live in.

I came across the documentary 'The Linguists' which I want to share.

If you find this interesting you may also enjoy the books 'Language Myths' and 'Spoken Here'.

Enjoy.

Feline Dream - Lull (BEW remix)

Quite a few years a go (approx. 15!) there were a number of independant record shops in Belfast. One of my favourites was Dr. Robert's. This was because it had a rather large section dedicated to demo casettes made by bands from in and around the country, something that other larger chain stores didn't. This appealed to me for many reasons, not least because I had very little in the line of disposable income, so affordable fresh tunes were easy to get hold of (in a way that many young internet users probably can't quite appreciate).

My friend Colin and I spent a good amount of time listening to the gems and horrors we'd picked up. One in particular stood out, by Feline. It stood out because it made us laugh. The synths and melodramatic vocals cracked us up. We were smitten by American indie-rock and their brand of English synth pop was pretty hysterical to us at the time, but one track in particular stood out; Lull. It was, and still is quite special to me. Sparse, melodic and emotional. It reminds me of simpler times when life wasn't as digitally enhanced.

Imagine my joy and surprise when I got to converse with it's creators. When i finally got to see them perform, years later; when my palette had matured, it all made sense.

I eventually got offered the master files from the original 4-track cassettes and made a (camp?) remix. It's now online for everyone to enjoy. I hope you take the time to give it a listen. Even if it makes you laugh in the snooty way it did when I first heard it.
