Nicholas Keogh - A Removals Job

The new Belfast art centre 'The Mac' has opened - I helped do some sound on Nicky Keogh's film 'A Removals Job' which is part of the first exhibition. Here's the promo blurb:

The film follows the household clearance of a traditional two-up, two-down red brick terrace in Belfast. At first, the movements of the workers are erratic and violent; only after an understanding of each character has been established is order restored. Their movements are subtly choreographed, producing a seamless flow of objects that slot perfectly into a skip — reminiscent of the classic 1990s computer game Tetris.

Belfast-based Keogh’s previous work includes the construction and sailing of a bin boat along the Grand Canal in Venice. The boat was made from an industrial wheelie bin, bathtub, washing machine and other recycled items. This was part of Northern Ireland at the Venice Biennale, 2005.

A special thanks to the Lawrence Street Workshops and Hugh Mulholland, who made this project possible.

FET Booster / Vox Tonebender Tribute

Another two circuits I found online - tweaked to have the dodgy kind of character I like.

FET Booster
This is based on Donald Tillman's circuit (read his article, "An FET Preamp Cable"). I tried four different FETs before choosing the one which produced the most interesting grit when cranked up full.

Vox Tonebender Tribute 1
Based on a layout by Richard Boop. I've tried a variety of PNPs; they're socketed as I haven't settled on a pair yet. They're all producing bright, high gain, silicon fuzz so far, which I like. The original specified germanium transistors (SFT363/SFT337).

I changed capacitor values from the originals a little on each build. I've played them through two different practice amps and they both do different jobs. The FET booster is good for clipped rhythm work and the Tonebender does heavy riffs and solo wailing well.

Deadman's Ghost - The Broken Zoetrope

Deadman, now renamed Deadman's Ghost has released a new LP on Umor-Rex featuring a bew remix. Here's the promo text:

The Broken Zoetrope is the debut album of Deadman’s Ghost (formerly Deadman), the project lead by Belfast musician Jason Mills. Released on transparent limited edition vinyl and digital format, it features four new compositions produced in collaboration with sound engineer David Baxter (aka Kab Driver) and four remixes by Northern Irish electronica artists.

The cinematic scope and stylistic experimentation which was acclaimed by reviewers of Cerebral Frontier, drawing comparisons to Beck and David Holmes, is further refined on The Broken Zoetrope. Post-rock instrumentation and electronic soundscapes coalesce with all manner of other ingredients; samples of random people recollecting their dreams and nightmares, shuffling funk drum breaks, apocalyptic lyrics and overdriven pop hooks burst out of the speakers with sub-bass energy. On the flipside, remixes of Cerebral Frontier tracks by Defcon, Barry’s Electric Workshop, T-Polar and The Crimson Underground span from blissed-out electronica to dark, brooding psychedelia. Instruments and vocals from the original songs are processed and used as a catalyst for exploring new sonic territories.

VISCERAL ATTACK
Formed in 2006 and based in Co. Fermanagh, VISCERAL ATTACK has played with bands such as MUNICIPAL WASTE, UNLEASHED, GAMA BOMB, SSS and more. The band has played and toured all over Ireland, England and Scotland. The band's debut EP "V For Viscera"' was released in 2008, and their first full length album "Quick and Severe" was sort-of-released in 2010.

At the start of 2012 the band signed with Belfast label PUNKERAMEA RECORDS to release "Quick and Severe" officially at this gig.

THE BURNT REYNOLDS

Combining abrasive jagged guitars with powerful melodies this band makes a strong impact creating an extremely tight, melodic form of rock at times reminiscent of HELMET before briskly moving on to sounds capes normally reserved for ...AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD and RIVAL SCHOOLS.

Already hotly tipped by BBC's ACROSS THE LINE, 2012 will see THE BURNT REYNOLDS on the live circuit as much as possible. With new recordings now firmly under their belt the band is hungry to make its mark on the local music scene and beyond - this is a bad not to be ignored.

NO MATTER

NO MATTER is a Belfast based trio playing fast-paced pop punk which formed in late 2010 from the remains of THE LOBOTOMIES, NUMSKULL, LEAP FOR LENIN and THE DANGERFIELDS. The band's main inspirations are NOFX, ALKALINE TRIO, SCREECHING WEASEL and THE RAMONES. The band is striving to make itsmark having already headlined in London within 6 months of forming, with plans for as many gigs as possible.

"...playing a fun set of catchy tracks, usually based around some nice guitar riffs and Dan's chanting vocals...there's something almost GREEN DAY-esque about them. They also have a very good stage presence and manage to get the crowd laughing more than once" BBC Across The Line
